Christopher Hughes - Membership Secretary
Since contributing to the harvest mouse project, I am very glad to have supported the Devon Mammal Group as membership secretary. I have always been keen to learn more about nature and have worked on reserves for many years as a Devon Wildlife Trust volunteer.

I have been a member of The Mammal Society since 1978 and helped with the Youth Group (as it was then) in the 1980’s. I am interested in all aspects of nature conservation. I have a particular enthusiasm for otters, including carrying out the survey of over 400 sites in the South West for the Fifth Otter Survey of England in 2009-10 and some of the region in 2022-3. I joined the Devon Mammal Group committee after a call for new members in 2017.

Working as an ecologist in Devon since 2005, I have been acutely aware of the decline in so many of our native mammal species. My involvement in the Harvest Mouse Project finds me poking around in every bit of long grass and herbage I encounter in the hope of finding nests.

I have a lifelong interest in British Mammals and have previously been involved in a wide range of survey and conservation projects relating to otters, water vole, hedgehog harvest mouse and other small mammals, with a specific interest in hazel dormice. I am an experienced trainer and enjoy sharing my knowledge and skills with others.

Beth Markey - Committee Member
For as long as I've been able to walk and talk, I've had an interest in wildlife and the conservation of nature. Later, this extended to a professional capacity, having worked for organisations including the RSPB, Environment Agency and Wildwood Trust. Interested in all mammals but having had the privilege to aid hedgehog rescues has elevated these gorgeous, prickly critters to a special place in my heart.

I work as an ecologist in the public and charity sectors, following a longstanding interest in wildlife and conservation. I have been a DMG member since 2002 and committee member since 2004-5, helping with events, surveys, training, and sourcing terrible raffle prizes. Similar to another Devon mammal, I enjoy peanut butter and sleeping

Ellie Knott - Treasurer
I have been a Devon Mammal Group committee member since 2000, and have been Treasurer since 2005. I work for the Devon Biodiversity Records Centre and am keen to encourage everyone to record mammals. If we don’t know where things are, we can’t protect them. I’m interested in all mammals, but otters are my favourites – even though it took me 18 years to see one in the wild in Devon!
