One of the aims of the Devon Mammal Group is to further our knowledge of the range and distribution of mammals across the county. All records collected by us are sent to Devon Biodiversity Records Centre (DBRC)
DBRC run a database of species records in Devon. Records come both from organised surveys and incidental sightings, and the records that YOU send in are very important. Mammals cannot be protected if we don’t know where they are.
However, there are a lot of gaps in the database. Otters and dormice are fairly well recorded in Devon, but many of the more common species are not. We want to know about anything and everything. So, what do the DBRC we need to know?
An environmental record has four core elements – who, what, when and where:

An environmental record has four core elements – who, what, when and where:
- Who – your name and contact details. Your name and address will be included on the Records Centre Database and you may be invited to take part in other wildlife surveys. Your details will not be passed on to anyone else.
- What you saw – name (English or Latin) or a description if you don’t know. A description is very helpful if it is something rare.
- When – the date you saw it. This can be just the year, the year and the month, or the full date.
- Where – this can be pinpointed on the map.
